Summary:
The objective of this project is to use IpCop (Free Linux Distribution) in a Virtual Machine to protect a Windows host system on any network. IpCop is a very powerful Linux based Firewall with advanced functions like: VPN, NAT, Intrusion Detection (Snort), Web Based administration, and Routing. The concept is that all traffic on the host OS will have to travel through the IpCop VM, thus protecting the Host. The host Windows system will not have any IP connectivity on its physical NIC and will be unable to communicate on the network without the VM running. The Host and the VM will communicate using the Microsoft Loopback Adaptor (installed on the host). You will also be able to configure other VMs to easily use the IpCop VM as their gateway to the network/internet as well.
Requirements:
- Host PC running Windows XP, Vista, or Server 2003 (maybe Server 2008).
- Download/Install latest version of Microsoft Virtual PC. (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/virtualpc/default.mspx)
- Download the latest .ISO build of IpCop. (http://www.ipcop.org/)
- Install Microsoft Loopback Adaptor (XP instructions: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/839013)
Suggestions:
- Review IpCop documentation (http://www.ipcop.org/index.php?module=pnWikka&tag=IPCopDocumentation)
I recommend the 'Installation Manual' and 'Quick Start Guide'
- Although you will not be altering any system files, it is recommended that you back up your system before starting!
Note: This HowTo was performed on a Windows Vista Ultimate system.

Have you ever found yourself in a situation where you need to create or update a network or server diagram or map, but did not have a license for Microsoft Visio? Maybe you are in a situation where creating such a diagram is a one time task or a rare occurrence making the justification for investing in excess of $200 for Microsoft Visio Standard Edition or more than $400 for Visio Professional Edition difficult? Or maybe you need a solution quicker than you can drive to a store to purchase a boxed copy of Visio? Or maybe you use an operating system that is not supported by recent editions of Microsoft Visio such as Linux or Macintosh OS X? Or maybe you were searching for a good set of free network and server icons to use in any editor and found the best ones or most complete sets only seem to exist as Visio stencil sets (.VSS files)?

I tried and personally don’t care for most of the free and open source Visio alternatives available. Dia is an excellent example of a good and powerful diagramming application for certain purposes, but my experiences with it left me thinking there must be a better solution for quickly throwing together and organizing a simple network diagram. Other viable alternatives I found supporting multiple platforms tend to be cloud based. I personally have huge security concerns with the notion of using a cloud based solution for creating and hosting network diagrams and server maps online. Think about the potential for damage possible to your enterprise or organization if all your host names, IP addresses, and system functions and/or network device identifications fell into the wrong hands? In addition most cloud solutions charge recurring subscription fees or offer free accounts that are extremely restrictive.

Aug 08, 2018  IPCop is a freeware software firewall solution that is easy to set up and incredibly secure. This guide will walk you through the steps to get it running! The good news is that you can get most of Visio’s functionality for creating network diagrams and server maps by using Cisco’s free network topology icons with the open source LibreOffice Draw (or OpenOffice.org Draw) application. Best of all LibreOffice is a cross-platform productivity suite that runs natively on many different operating systems. By creating your own LibreOffice Draw “Gallery Themes” you can have all the drag and drop convenience of using Microsoft Visio stencils sets without spending a single penny. This process also allows you to safely maintain the content and data on your own systems.

Here is a sample network diagram that I recreated based off of an original network diagram featured in the IPCop installation manual documentation showing an example of a four way segmented network:

In the comparative illustration above I attempted to stay relatively true to the original diagram with some very minor drafting best practice changes such as removing a number of doglegs in the diagram, fixing some alignment issues, straightening out some connector line offsets, adding segmentation colors to my connector lines, and featuring more professional and nicer looking anti-aliased fonts.
